SMART GALLERY – ARTIST OF THE MONTH MARK BRIERLEY
Our Artist of the Month for April is the hugely popular Mark Brierley. Marks work is exhibited in the Redbrick Mill, Batley gallery…. Here’s Mark in a bit more detail!!
Q. – What is your full name? (embarrassing middle names included please)
A. – Mark ? Brierley (seriously, I cannot tell you my middle name, sorry Dad!)
Q. – Marital Status?
A. –Married to Emma
Q. – Who or what inspires you?
A. – There’s not one particular thing, it’s usually things that I see in everyday life or magazines that will spark off ideas for work. I’m very observant and have been told that I have a photographic memory, which is helpful, especially when it comes to remembering what rooms are like when I’m doing commissions.
Q. – When did you decide you wanted to be a full time artist?
A. – It’s always been the one thing that I’ve enjoyed, firstly at school, then went on to art college, which was great, then I forgot about it for several years when I worked for the family business, though it was obviously linked with the interior design element of the business. After we sold the business about eight years ago, I started painting and sold my first pieces through a local gallery. As I increased the number of galleries I felt confident enough to go full time, which was about six years ago now.
Q. – Where do you work?
A. – A studio in Kendal, it’s great as there are 14 artists who have individual studios under the one roof. There are only a couple of us that are full time but it’s great because it adds that social element to work that most artists don’t get.
Q. – Describe a typical working day.
A. - I’ll drive to Kendal, walk over a bridge over the river Kent, which is great on a good morning, usually get to the studio for 9 o’clock. Then I’ll work til about 2 o’clock, as my work needs time to dry, there’s only a certain amount I can do daily. This leaves the afternoon free to do gallery visits and pick up materials.
Q. – If you weren’t an artist what job would you do?
A. –I’m not sure, which is worrying, as it’s a great way to earn a living.
Q. – What is your greatest achievement both privately and professionally?
A. – ………….
Q. – Do you have any pets?
A. – Yes, two Chihuahuas, Bambi and Bea. When Emma was young she read a book called ‘the tiniest dog in the world’ so when we got our own place that was it, we got Bambi and then for company when we moved to the lakes we got Bea. That was our excuse anyway!
Q. – What is your favourite colour?
A. –Probably cooler colours, aquas/blues
Q. – What is your favourite food?
A. –Pizza Quattro formaggi at pizza express, with bruscetta to start.
Q. – What is your favourite drink?
A. –Mocha, if it’s cold outside or a cold beer in the sun.
Q. – What is your favourite car?
A. – I love cars, but I would personally like a ‘porsche cayenne’ as it combines the style with the space that I need.
Q. – What is your favourite film?
A. – I don’t really have a favorite but like either feel good films or suspense thrillers. We spent weeks watching the ‘Prison Break’ series back to back on dvd, which is amazing.
Q. – What is your favourite album?
A. –A good middle of the road album that I like is ‘Join with us’ by ‘The Feeling’
Q. – Do you have a favourite quote?
A. – If I said I did I’d be lying (that’s not a quote by the way!)
Q. – What is the last book you read?
A. – It was years ago, it was the ‘Da Vinci Code’ I have a really short attention span and find it difficult to get through a page without switching off, it did take months to read though.
Q. – Do you have any bad habits (that you can admit to?!)
A. – Not one (that I’ll admit to!)
Q. – If a film was made about you and your life, which famous actor would most suit the role of “Mark Brierley” ?
A. – Emma says Jude Law- “what is she after?”
Q. – What is your dream holiday?
A. – Anywhere nice and warm with a pool, with no worries.
Q. – Describe yourself in 5 words
A. – Honest, reliable, observant, creative, practical.
Q. – If you were a superhero who would you be and why?
A. – I would save anyone else from having to answer this question! I’ll just say ‘Danger Mouse’ so you can’t accuse me of not answering your last question!
