Entertainment veteran Rolf Harris is to be honoured by Bafta with its highest award, a fellowship.

The 82-year-old broadcaster, musician and artist is being recognised for his “outstanding and exceptional contribution to television”, the Press Association reported.

Australian Harris has been a regular fixture on TV screens since he signed his first deal with the BBC in 1953.

Successive waves have grown up with his programmes which have included Rolf’s Cartoon Club, Rolf On Art and Animal Hospital. He has also enjoyed a musical career with chart hits such as Two Little Boys and Sun Arise.

In 2005, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of the Queen by the BBC to celebrate her 80th birthday.

Bafta chairman Tim Corrie said: “Rolf Harris is one of the world’s most iconic entertainers. He has huge audience appeal across multiple generations, and we are delighted to honour his contribution to television and the arts.”

Harris said: “I’m hugely honoured and very thrilled.”

Known as “the world’s smallest engraver” for his miniature masterpieces, Graham Short has spent almost 50 years honing his craft, going to physical and mental extremes to produce the highest-quality engravings in the world.

His minature masterpieces include ‘cutting edge’ (the words ‘nothing is impossible’engraved on the sharp edge of a razor blade) and ‘The lords prayer’ engraved on the head of a gold pin which can be viewed through a powerful microscope.

When working on the unimaginable intricacies of a new piece he is able to physically slow his heart rate and to become unnaturally still in order to allow his fingers to work with no distracting movements.

The media response has been overwhelming and he has become an overnight sensation. His ‘hands of genius’ have rendered this master craftsmen one of the world’s most sought after and revered living artists. He has private collectors all over the world and his works sell for tens of thousands of pounds.

“I’ve had a marvellous time working on these paintings. Each one of them captivated me for a different reason. The stunning clear pale blue of an outback sky outlining the shapes of the Devil’s Marbles, with the gleaming white gums and myriad grasses, or the start branches of trees about to shed their golden leaves against a backdrop of blue-grey evergreens, or the way the small figures move off into the distance on a beautiful cornish beach. All these grab me. While I love the subjects themselves, it’s the light, the colours, the composition of these scenes that held my attention in the first place, and i just HAD to get them down onto canvas in my own signature style”
