Robert Lenkiewicz Exhibition Coming Soon to Smart Gallery
Smart Gallery is honoured to present this extraordinary exhibition of paintings by Robert Lenkiewicz (1941 – 2002), one of Britain’s most colourful, fascinating and talented artists. As long ago as 1973, the cover of ‘The Daily Telegraph Magazine’ summed up his career with ‘The artist as entertainer…philosopher…and social conscience.’ Always the scourge of the art establishment, Lenkiewicz lived a life with panache entirely on his own terms, creating a rich and powerful body of work on an epic scale, executed with a skill and ambition unrivalled by contemporary painters. This magnificent collection of paintings includes a handful of rare earlier pieces but draws largely on Lenkiewicz’s 1994 project ‘The Painter with Women’ – some of which have not been exhibited or previously offered for sale.

Peter Brook Weekend Event on 9th and 10th of April
Here at Smart Gallery, we are having a special two-day event to commemorate Peter Brook’s life (1927-2009) and works.
On the 9th and 10th of April, join us for bubbly and nibbles, and get an exclusive look into some rare limited edition prints and originals by Peter Brook.
Peter was born in nearby Holmfirth, where he first became aware of his beautiful surroundings. After being in the RAF for two years, Peter returned to his routes and became an art teacher at Sowerby Bridge Grammar School where he began to build on his now great reputation as an artist.
Peter’s paintings continue to show his twinkling humour as well as the vast and beautiful landscapes of his beloved Yorkshire. They show Peter and his faithful dog, admiring the views and exploring the lands, giving us the chance to see the amazing scenery he saw over his lifetime.
Don’t hesitate to call the gallery on 01924 455445 if you have any questions on what will be exhibited at the event. We hope to see you there!
Art’s in the right place for father and daughter
A father and daughter have teamed up to create a new website helping people buy and sell fine art.
Melvyn Cohen, who previously owned Smart Gallery before passing it to his daughter, Shelley, says that theplace4art.co.uk was like an eBay or AutoTrader exclusively for art.
Shelley has said that at the gallery, people often called in to ask whether they bought back second-hand artwork, and that people had many reasons for wanting to sell on their art.
The website is also good for buyers who are looking for art which has sold out in galleries, and for new artists who are unable to contact galleries to sell their work.
“A lot of art can appreciate in value over time, so people may want to sell to release the money in their paintings,” Shelley added.
“All we require is that the art or sculpture is limited edition or original work worth £200.00 or more,” she said. “It may have been bought in a quaint little shop in the Dales, or at a gallery like ours or even in the middle of London.”
On the website, sellers are able to upload up to three images of the artwork and give a full description of the piece they are selling. They then publish their contact details so interested buyers can get in touch and arrange to view the art before buying.
Semi-retired Melvyn said, “We are simply a site where people can sell or buy art. We’re not an auction site and make nothing from the sale ourselves. We only charge a one-off fee to advertise the work for a month and people don’t need to register to use the site.”
“Already we are encouraged by how people have responded to it. It’s very, very positive and I believe it will grow steadily.”
Take a Look at a New Website – www.theplace4art.co.uk
An easy and inexprensive new way to buy and sell fine art has just been launched by the new website www.theplace4art.co.uk.
With many years’ experience both in running a gallery and framing, the needs of clients helped to fill this gap in the market.
The new website, besides offering the general public the opportunity to sell fine art, will also provide an avenue for artists and galleries. Only art at £200.00 + will be offered for a one-off monthly fee.
The site simply brings buyers and sellers together, and they can make any arrangements they wish.
